I have been a customer of Virgin TV for as long as I have been in my current home. Of course it wasn’t called Virgin then, but Virgin TV took over the company that were supplying me with the myriad of channels that kept the children entertained and the (now ex) husband supplied with more football and sports channels than he could possibly watch. Now, ten years down the line things have changed. The children have grown up and there is no husband anymore.

Changing Viewing Habits

Gone are the days when the TV was on at all hours to catch a certain football match or other sporting event. No longer is the TV on all day to keep small children amused. I am so out of touch with children’s programming now it’s ridiculous. In fact it is very rare for the television to be on during the day at all. I have changed the bundle of channels on and off over the years to cater to the needs of family, when money has been tight the subscription has been cut back and when money has been less of an issue the bundle of channels were increased again.

I have always found that when I have had to contact Virgin they have been very helpful and often chatty, not just focussing on the hard sell or simply going through the motions that other customer services seem to do. I have to admit that the automated menus and recorded messages are very annoying and can sometimes seem endless, plus the music or messages that you hear when you are on hold can drive you to distraction, but I know that when I get through to the right department there will be a human voice on the other end of the phone that will listen to me and help me.

Back to Basics

At this moment in time, after another call to the people at Virgin TV I have gone right back to square one with just the basic channels. It’s all I need now. The children regularly come round with DVD’s they think I will enjoy and to be honest that’s enough for me. I don’t need to be paying for something I have no intention of using and the people at Virgin seem to understand this, and have always been happy to chop and change my television bundles when I ask. They have always turned up on time when they have had to come out to look at the set top box or even replace it and install a new one for me.

Compared to other services that I subscribe to like the gas and the electric Virgin give me very little to complain about. So now when I sit down to watch the evening news or catch up on a soap opera I don’t have to wade through dozens of useless and expensive channels, I have what I want where and when I want it. I am also reassured by the fact that should anything go wrong with the box or if I need to add the sports channels again (you never know) I can get everything done with a simple phone call to a human being on the end of the telephone.

Do you know what Virgin TV package best suits your needs? Do you want the basic channels? Movie and sports? Or maybe you want broadband included? Digital TV Advice can help you compare the packages available.

For those who are power smartphone users, the Samsung I9300 Galaxy S3 is right around the corner. This is a handset with everything but the kitchen sink. From the display to the mobile operating system, it is pure technology in a small package. Get a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy S3 here in this short article.

A Full-featured Smartphone

This is a smartphone for those who are be the “tech heads” of the world. It comes with all the Wi-Fi connections, a camera that negates needing a digital camera anymore, and the latest in Android software. It even comes with a FM stereo radio. Those who are thinking about leaving the Apple iPhone “walled garden” may want to take a serious look at this piece of work.

A Super Clear And Large Screen

Starting off with the most important part, the screen, we find the Samsung Galaxy S3 was given a large one with the same clarity as a “retina” display. The pixels per inch come out to be 319. The iPhone has 326, which the human eye will probably never tell the difference. The Super AMOLED display happens to be more than an inch larger than the iPhone. It is 4.6 inches of digital real estate while the iPhone’s is 3.5 inches. Samsung did not provide a manual keyboard with this smartphone, so all typing is going to be done on the virtual keyboard. The display is covered with Corning “Gorilla Glass” to protect it during those inevitable drops.

This Smartphone Hooks Up To Most Any Network

The wireless connectivity of the Samsung Galaxy S3 is excellent. It has DLNA, “Wi-Fi Direct” and Wi-Fi hotspot. If you do not know what “Wi-Fi Direct” is yet, this is the ability to send data to a nearby device that is can also use this type of radio. It is a “peer to peer” technology that is a competitor to bluetooth. Speaking of bluetooth, the S3 has it in a slightly older version; 3.0. This smartphone can talk over 2G, 3G and 4G networks.

A Camera Fit For A Photographer

The camera is as powerful as any smartphone available today. The Samsung S3 smartphone sports a 12 megapixel picture taker on the back and a two megapixel camera on the front. The rear camera is going to be able to deliver super clear high definition video in the 1080p format. Samsung enabled it with LED flash as well as all the regular goodies that a flagship smartphone usually flaunts. Look for this smartphone to be seen at MWC 2012 in Barcelona and released on the market soon after that.

Over the past century the way in which information is shared wirelessly has changed significantly. First radio and then television revolutionised how quickly people could find out about world events and enhanced home entertainment by a significant margin. Now in the 21st century the internet has superseded, or rather amalgamated, these services and with wireless internet access all of this content is available wherever you go.

Wireless internet service providers come in two distinct forms and their contribution to the way in which we conduct our social lives and get on with our jobs is difficult to underemphasise. The first form of wireless internet is Wi-Fi, an extension of the fixed line broadband which connects most households to the web. The second is mobile broadband, a service which allows you to go completely wire-free on your smartphone or tablet for high speed browsing in areas with good network coverage.

Wi-Fi in the home has made it much easier for multiple users to share the same broadband connection from a fixed line ISP (internet service provider). There is no need to hook up to your router via an Ethernet cable if you have a Wi-Fi enabled device and the kids can be chatting with friends on a laptop upstairs while mum is in the living room enjoying as spot of online shopping from her iPad without interrupting one another.

Wi-Fi has also revolutionised home entertainment because smart TVs, set top boxes and games consoles can all take advantage of wireless internet connectivity to turn your movie room into a multimedia hub. Video streaming and on demand services work great over Wi-Fi and you will not need to drill any holes in the wall or drape wires across open floor space if you have a wireless router at home.

Mobile broadband took off in a big way once 3G networking was widely available, but even faster speeds are possible thanks to the gradual roll-out of 4G networks across the globe. Mobile broadband is most commonly found on smartphones and the more expensive tablet devices, although anyone with a laptop can enjoy the same type of service if they invest in a USB mobile broadband dongle with one of the many network providers who work in this sector.

Mobile broadband is obviously more flexible than Wi-Fi because it does not have to involve a landline connection and can be accessed across the country, provided there is network coverage from a nearby cell tower. The other side of the story is that you will usually have to adhere to a data allowance each month on a mobile broadband tariff, which can restrict the amount you will be able to use it when compared to Wi-Fi. In addition the download speeds on 3G mobile broadband are still inferior to Wi-Fi and 4G networking is still only available in a small number of countries, so wireless ISPs need to roll out this next-gen technology at a faster rate.

With the spread of wireless internet access, most people cannot remember a time before they were able to check Wikipedia from their sofas or stream a movie on the train to work. This makes the times during which you are unable to get online wirelessly even more problematic and highlights the importance of the contribution of wireless internet to the modern world.

Today, it seems like everyone has a smartphone, and it’s not hard to see why. Smartphones make it easy to stay in touch and offer a variety of special features that come in handy on the go, such as Internet capabilities, music, video, GPS, and more. Unfortunately, all of these features come with a hefty price tag, and if you’re in the market for a new smartphone, you may be frustrated when looking at the prices. The good news is that it’s rare you’ll have to pay the manufacturer’s suggested retail price for a smartphone. There are several different ways to get a discounted price on your next smartphone, or even get it for free.

Sign a New Contract With Your Cell Phone Provider

Most cell phone providers will offer a discount on their smartphones if you choose to sign a service contract with them. There’s likely to be a minimum amount of time for the contract, usually one or two years, and most contracts come with hefty fees if you want to break them. But if you’re satisfied with your cellular provider, then signing a contract in order to get a discounted smartphone can be a good idea. Prices vary depending on the popularity and price of the phone, as well as how long the smartphone has been released. Some of the phones may actually be free after rebate.

Check Online Resellers

Websites such as Ebay, Amazon, Swappa, and Wirefly often have great deals on smartphones that you can take part in, even if you’re currently under contract. Wirefly sells phones from providers such as Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and T-Mobile, and has great deals on phones, even those that are newly released. Amazon Wireless also has great deals on phones, but you must sign a six-month contract in order to get the best deal on many of them. Ebay has both new and used smartphones in a variety of price ranges, but often you have to bid to get the best deal. Swappa is similar to Ebay, but it’s for Android smartphones only. The great thing about Swappa is they guarantee that your phone will work, and if it doesn’t, they’ll fix it for you. Swappa is also good for selling your old smartphone, or picking up a new smartphone when you’re currently under contract.

Shop at Electronics Stores

If you want to hold your smartphone in your hands and test it out before buying it, purchasing it from an electronics store, such as Best Buy or Radio Shack, can be a good idea. They often have sales that rival anything that can be found online, and can be cheaper than going directly through your cell phone provider. To get the best deal, you’ll probably have to sign a contract, but it can still save you money over going to your cell phone provider directly.

Buy a Smartphone Around the Holidays

Many cell phone providers, retail stores, and online stores offer their very best prices during Black Friday and through the holiday season leading up to Christmas. If you can wait until this time of year to purchase your smartphone, you may be rewarded with a price that’s low or even free.

Mary Blanchard, a UK resident and mother of three, understands the importance of cutting corners wherever she can. She loves looking for deals online, and finds couponcroc.co.uk to be a good place for discounts.

Perhaps you have already witnessed the amazing picture quality that Blu-ray can bring to home theaters, but Blu-ray media is also able to take advantage of the latest 3-D technology that has made going to the cinema a more engaging experience. Now that 3-D televisions from major electronics firms such as Samsung, Sony and LG are readily available on the market, finding a Blu-ray player that works well with these devices can be your next goal.

Choosing the right Blu-ray player for your home theater is not just about finding the best picture quality but also involves examining its audio capabilities, design, and any special features it carries. Here are some characteristics to look for before making a purchase:

Picture:

Since the whole point of investing in Blu-ray media is that it offers superior picture quality when compared to other storage media, finding a player that makes the most out of your 3-D Blu-ray library is important. All of the top tier players from Sony, Samsung and LG offer full 1080p performance for both Blu-ray discs and streaming media services.

In addition, good players are designed to match the cinema experience, which is why they include features such as 24p True Cinema and Deep Color technology. True Cinema enables compatible televisions to show films at cinema frame rates, while Deep Color technology allows displays to show billions of colors for significantly better picture quality.

Sound:

Sound often goes overlooked when it comes to designing the perfect home theater, but to truly capture the immersive experience of 3-D, you should look for a player with strong audio capabilities. Top tier players such as Sony’s BDP S770 use Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD technology to produce a sound that closely mimics what would be found in a recording studio.

Some players, like LG’s BX580, offer additional audio components such as Linear Pulse Code Modulation, which is a fancy way of saying that it supports 7.1 surround sound. Although you will need to invest in a good set of speakers to take advantage of this feature, a home theater that can produce crystal clear whispers as well as seat-rumbling bass will surely impress your friends.

Design:

Let’s face it: home theater devices can take up a great deal of cabinet space, especially once you consider all the peripherals that use HD technology such as gaming consoles. Finding a Blu-ray player that is not only powerful, but stylish and compact can help save space. Samsung’s BD-C7900, for instance, is both sleek and small, making it a great choice if looks are your concern.

If you have a lot of peripherals, finding a player that can integrate these devices is also important, which is why you should look for ones with multiple input/output ports. Panasonic’s DMP-BDT300 shines when it comes to connectivity, as it features two HDMI outputs, two USB ports, and one analog port. It also comes with a slot for SD memory cards, giving users another media storage option.

Extras:

While using 3-D Blu-ray media is the main reason to buy one of these players, they also come with additional features to further enhance your home theater experience. For example, Sony’s BDP S770 supports the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), which allows you to stream media content through the player from any DLNA-certified device such as a laptop computer.

Now that you know what to look for in a quality player, you can start building your 3-D Blu-ray media library with confidence.

Similar to most wireless PC to TV converter, the HP Wireless TV Connect also come with two boxes where one is transmitter and the other is receiver. The transmitter is for you to connect to your PC/laptop and the receive is to connect to either a TV or projector. The two boxes are carrying equal size of 4.5 x 4.1 x 1 and the chasis is design with a sleeky black plastic material. The device seems to be bulkier compare to the Warpia StreamHD, which merely needs a compact USB dongle.

The transmitter comes with an USB and HDMI port; while the receiver features with USB, HDMI, and a power port. The front of both boxes have 2 LEDs: the white LED indicates the device is on and the blue light indicates a connection is established. Two boxes also come with reset buttons.

Setup

It is very easy to set up this HP Wireless TV Connect. The laptop side box has an image of a PC and the TV side box has an image of a TV. The TV box contain a HDMI port for you to plug into your TV’s HDMI port. A power adapter is available for you to plug into the wall power socket. The laptop box is also having a HDMI port for you to plug into the HDMI connector of your laptop; while the USB port is for you to plug into one of your laptop’s USB ports in order to supply power for the box. All the required cables are provided and are properly coded with color so that you will have no difficulty at all to connect them to the right ports. There is no drivers required for installation. You can just connect both boxes and switch your TV to the right input. Once everything is done, you can just turn on your TV and you will see the picture is switches to the TV automatically. You will need to press the screen sharing key on your laptop in order for you to display your laptop content on the TV screen. To fit the display of your TV, you might need to shrink your screen when you are using the HP Wireless TV Connect. The audio will started playing on the TV through the HDMI connection. This device has a PC hanger the hangs off of the back of the laptop that you can use to hold the box on the back of the screen.

When display the picture on the TV, you will find the action is smooth without lagging, I did not find any latency at the time using this HP Wireless TV Connect. HP offical website claims that it is not more than 1ms latency and I think they are being right. Even the quality of the image display on the screen is not of top quality, but overall it is still good. In case you not realize, actually the technology of lossy compression is used when you want to send image wirelessly and quickly. Thus, if you take a closer look on the screen you will find the compression artifacts.

As per a research firm, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech ’s latest findings, Apple seems to be ceding ground to Android in Europe, especially the Western part of Europe. While Google’s free mobile computing platform of Android continues to dominate and consolidate the market share, Apple’s declining share could be a direct result of the tough economic conditions that are plaguing Europe at this point of time.

For the record, Apple IPhone’s share has increased in the United States of America and Great Britain. In the United States, Apple’s share has improved from 25 to 36 percent over the corresponding period ending in November last year. In Great Britain, the share improved from 21 percent to 31 percent over the corresponding period ending in November last year. However, in Spain, Italy, Germany and France, Apple’s share has taken some beating.

In France, Apple dropped from 29 to 21 percent share of the market and in Germany it took a drop from 27 to 22 percent. Android holds an impressive 61 percent market share in Germany.

While there is no clarity on the reasons behind dwindling sales of IPhones in Western Europe, there are reasons to correlate this drop with the tough economic conditions and the exorbitant pricing of the ‘Apple IPhone’ when you compare it against the finest Android phones on offer by Samsung. Add to this the fact that for a country like Germany, the improvement in Android’s market share could also be explained by the vast market potential of Android applications. We all know that Germany sees a lot of application development activity for mobile apps based on Android mobile computing platform. This could be a probable explanation for Germany’s love with Android, because the number and scope of Android apps has surpassed that of Apple due to a very high number of Android handsets in use across the globe.

Does this mean that Apple is losing out to Google? Well, yes, that could be a true statement and Android’s success also lies in the fact that more and more handset manufacturers are now making handsets that run on Android. In case of Apple, the handset is of a proprietary nature and the platform is a close-ended one, that requires substantial investment for app development as well. This has the potential to hurt Apple’s bottom-line over a long term. And this could be considered a similar case when you pit Yahoo against Google in the battle of search, that was eventually won by Google.

While a quarter’s statistics are not a reliable indicator of the major trends, it is likely that Apple will face tough competition in the United States after the launch of Amazon fire. All in all, Apple IPhone was launched as a niche product. Can it continue to be marketed as a niche product when Android handsets have a greater mass appeal? It is a game of numbers, after all. And, Android does have the right numbers on its side.

This tech post is written by Mike Long. Mike is a follower of IPhone, Android phone, handheld computers, and the latest Nokia Lumia phone. As the year comes to a close, Mike has covered some of the lesser known brands in mobile computing. One of these is the Micronet range of handhelds, that offer rugged functionality for in-vehicle deployments.

T-Mobile has been rather like an unwanted child to its parent company, Deutsche Telekom. The German telecommunications company has been reluctant to spend very much in the U.S., with the result that T-Mobile has been left behind while the other major carriers are moving toward 4G LTE networks and offering the iPhone. Deutsche Telekom was eager to escape the US market with the proposed $39 billion sale of T-Mobile to AT&T. But last August, the US Justice Department stepped in with a lawsuit to block the sale, and the FCCchairman called for AT&T to show that the acquisition would serve the public. AT&T’s willingness to put itself on the hook for a breakup fee of $3 billion cash plus another $3 billion in roaming agreements and assets indicated a real commitment, but what is the future for T-Mobile if the deal falls through?

T-Mobile’s strategy over the past year has to been to compete solely on price, emphasizing their drastically reduced rates and heavily promoting their prepaid service. But this strategy won’t stabilize the business.

They could take that $3 billion breakup fee and buy wireless spectrum, possibly from Clearwire, which may need the cash, or from Dish Network, which might scrap its own plans to build an LTE network if the price was right, or partner with T-Mobile in building the network. T-Mobile might also try to pick up some regional carriers, like Metro PCS or Leap Wireless, although they use a different wireless technology. This would make T-Mobile more valuable if it were to be on the market again. But it seems unlikely that Deutsche Telekom will be any more willing to invest in T-Mobile than it has been before.

Cable companies are also possible partners for T-Mobile. Cable providers have plenty of spectrum available and after the failure of Pivot, their joint venture with Sprint, they may be looking for a new partner to help them exploit it. And cable providers might eventually take over T-Mobile, freeing Deutsche Telekom from its involvement.

A merger of equals between Sprint and T-Mobile is also a possibility, but the cash strapped Sprint couldn’t buy T-Mobile outright, so Deutsche Telekom would remain with a large stake in the resulting company.’

Finally, T-Mobile could look for another major international wireless company to adopt it. One possibility is China telecom Corp, which has announced plans to start offering service under its own brand next year. However the acquisition of a major American company by Chinese one might be wildly unpopular, and would surely draw the ire of politicians.

Jack Dunnington is an a T-Mobile phone user who has been greatly concerned and frigtened by the possibility of a take-over. Through his website people find phone numbers for companies such as for the t-mobile customer service.

Until about 20 years ago, buying a television was a straightforward process, and the main consideration was the price and size of the unit. In the last several decades, the technology behind the modern television has evolved significantly. Shopping for a new TV is now a complex process, and there are many things to consider when comparing the various options.

Different types of technology power modern televisions. Each has pros and cons.

LCD Screens

Most people are familiar with LCD technology because it is widely used in computer screens. The liquid crystal display televisions are some of the most widely sold models in today’s market, pairing reasonably reliable performance with an affordable price tag. LCD models are some of the thinnest televisions available. They are compatible with computers, making it easy to connect a PC or laptop to your home theatre system. Most viewers find the picture offered by LCD televisions to be sharp enough for most uses, though blacks do not display as nicely as on the older cathode ray tube TV. LCD televisions also come with some limitations when it comes to screen size. Larger LCD TVs generally use rear projection technology, making most LCD TVs with screen sizes over 40 inches on the expensive side.

Plasma

When a homeowner is looking for the best that money can buy, plasma display panel televisions are usually the top choice. Plasma screen TVs have a slim profile. Because the design uses thousands of fluorescent light bulbs to generate a high-resolution image, viewers report stunning picture quality. Still, the old-fashioned direct view TV offered sharper blacks. Plasma TVs are expensive but are coming down in price as they become widely available. Despite the superior picture quality, the fluorescent bulbs can generate a ghost image known as “burn-in” when the same graphic appears in the same place for extended periods. Some newer models shift the image slightly during standard use to minimize this problem. In addition, the plasma liquid is these televisions does not last forever; manufacturers estimate that these units should last around 20 years.

Extra Features

Regardless of the preferred type of television, some features stand out for serious shoppers. Televisions with added features come with a higher price tag, but many viewers find the improved experience worth the increased investment. Look for:

LED lighting – Usually sold with LCD televisions, this lighting source improves picture quality while also making the television more energy efficient.

Picture-in-picture – Allows viewers to monitor two different channels at the same time.

3D Viewing Capabilities – When paired with 3D glasses, viewers can recreate the interactive experience that used to be available only in theatres. This feature is particularly worthwhile with larger screen televisions.

Entertainment Packages – While modern TVs are freestanding units, a higher quality viewing experience is possible by combining the television with complementary entertainment packages. Basic systems include speakers, a receiver and a Blu-ray player.

To choose the right television, it’s important to match your budget with the basic performance you require. By understanding how technology works, you can be sure that your new purchase will give you many years of quality viewing.
