LCD televisions these days are known for their eye-catching-crystal-clear displays. A lot of factors come into play for the life-like pictures that it offers. The resolution factor, refresh rate, aspect ratio  and many others decide on the quality of display and one’s viewing experience. Two other factors that are important in LCD TVs are the contrast ratio and the dynamic ratio.

Contrast Ratio

Contrast Ratio is generally defined as the ratio of the contrast measurement between the brightest colour (white) and the darkest colour (black) in a scene. A good display is expected to have a high contrast ratio.

However, these measurements are not determined by a standard procedure. Each manufacturers have their own way of measuring. Hence these measurements are not suitable for comparisons between models as their numbers can go beyond one’s imagination with extreme methods used.

Different methods of measuring Contrast Ratio

Different methods of measuring contrast ratios are preferred by different manufacturers around the world.

The full on/full off method is one of them. In this case, the television is switched off in order to get the maximum dark level ratio and switched on, (increasing it to the maximum colour setting  and brightness setting) in order to get the brightest contrast measurement. The surrounding light effect of the room also plays an important part.

The ANSI contrast is another method of measuring, where the black and white contrast measurements  are taken simultaneously with the help of a checker board pattern. Again the light effect inside the room is important.

Some manufacturers use different device parameters, further inflating the calculated contrast ratio. With the use of DLP projectors, the filter wheel is enabled when switched on and disabled when switched off. This method may not be very accurate as it is not possible to determine contrast ratios with image content.

Dynamic Ratio

Generally used in the LCD technology, the dynamic ratio method uses the backlight lamp for its effect. For a dark image, the display would reduce the backlight lamp. This helps in effectively visualizing dark scenes even in dark rooms. Brightness is measured from the emitted luminous intensity on screen, generally measured in candela per square metre (cd/m2). If the reading is high, the screen will be brighter.

Both the method of  measurement has its own pros and cons. In a black and white movie or in a prolonged scene that happens in the dark, the preference is always with the high dynamic contrast ratio. On the other hand, with a fast moving picture or a sudden change from a bright atmosphere to a dark background and visa versa, the contrast ration offers excellent performance. Manufacturers these days have come up with some gorgeous television sets. A detailed study on all the aspects of a good display would definitely lead to continuous improvements in the world of televisions.
