Until about 20 years ago, buying a television was a straightforward process, and the main consideration was the price and size of the unit. In the last several decades, the technology behind the modern television has evolved significantly. Shopping for a new TV is now a complex process, and there are many things to consider when comparing the various options.

Different types of technology power modern televisions. Each has pros and cons.

LCD Screens

Most people are familiar with LCD technology because it is widely used in computer screens. The liquid crystal display televisions are some of the most widely sold models in today’s market, pairing reasonably reliable performance with an affordable price tag. LCD models are some of the thinnest televisions available. They are compatible with computers, making it easy to connect a PC or laptop to your home theatre system. Most viewers find the picture offered by LCD televisions to be sharp enough for most uses, though blacks do not display as nicely as on the older cathode ray tube TV. LCD televisions also come with some limitations when it comes to screen size. Larger LCD TVs generally use rear projection technology, making most LCD TVs with screen sizes over 40 inches on the expensive side.

Plasma

When a homeowner is looking for the best that money can buy, plasma display panel televisions are usually the top choice. Plasma screen TVs have a slim profile. Because the design uses thousands of fluorescent light bulbs to generate a high-resolution image, viewers report stunning picture quality. Still, the old-fashioned direct view TV offered sharper blacks. Plasma TVs are expensive but are coming down in price as they become widely available. Despite the superior picture quality, the fluorescent bulbs can generate a ghost image known as “burn-in” when the same graphic appears in the same place for extended periods. Some newer models shift the image slightly during standard use to minimize this problem. In addition, the plasma liquid is these televisions does not last forever; manufacturers estimate that these units should last around 20 years.

Extra Features

Regardless of the preferred type of television, some features stand out for serious shoppers. Televisions with added features come with a higher price tag, but many viewers find the improved experience worth the increased investment. Look for:

LED lighting – Usually sold with LCD televisions, this lighting source improves picture quality while also making the television more energy efficient.

Picture-in-picture – Allows viewers to monitor two different channels at the same time.

3D Viewing Capabilities – When paired with 3D glasses, viewers can recreate the interactive experience that used to be available only in theatres. This feature is particularly worthwhile with larger screen televisions.

Entertainment Packages – While modern TVs are freestanding units, a higher quality viewing experience is possible by combining the television with complementary entertainment packages. Basic systems include speakers, a receiver and a Blu-ray player.

To choose the right television, it’s important to match your budget with the basic performance you require. By understanding how technology works, you can be sure that your new purchase will give you many years of quality viewing.

Televisions have been an essential part of our lives for many decades, and advances in TV technology have made them more affordable and have improved their ability to display crisp, colorful images. In recent years, liquid-crystal display (LCD) televisions have become very popular due to the vibrant colors and sharpness of the images they display. Their thin construction also makes them lightweight and able to fit in places the traditional cathode ray tube television cannot.

LCD TVs have declined in price, but they still represent substantial investments for most people. Owners of LCD TVs should therefore understand how to properly take care of their televisions in order to extend the life of these products and save money. This simple guide is designed to help you take care of your LCD TV and keep it in good operating condition.

Tips to make your LCD TV last longer

One of the most important things you can do to maintain your LCD TV is to clean its screen properly. Dust and other particles can build up on the screens of LCD TVs, thereby distorting picture quality. Dirty screens need to be cleaned, but you must follow particular guidelines in order to avoid scratching or otherwise damaging these LCD screens. Some LCD TVs have special cleaning requirements that are outlined in their owner’s manuals, but most LCD screens can be cleaned with a soft, microfiber cloth. Dishtowels, paper towels and other rougher cloths should be avoided because they can scratch the screen of your LCD TV. If a dry cloth does not remove the dirt, you can apply a solution comprised of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water in a 50/50 mixture. Other cleaning solutions may damage the screen, so they should not be used. Of course, you should always turn off your LCD TV before you clean it. You should also use very little pressure when you are wiping your TV screen, and if you use the cleaning solution, wait for the screen to dry before you turn it back on.

The environment in which your LCD TV will be placed is also an important consideration. Excessively high temperatures or humidity can reduce the lifespan of LCD TVs. Major temperature fluctuations should also be avoided. A relatively dust-free environment is also key, and the screen and television should be regularly dusted according to the above instructions.

Much of the damage that LCD TVs suffer results from carelessness. Placing an LCD TV where young kids can easily get ahold of it can spell disaster, so LCD TVs should always be placed out of the reach of little children. Owners should also take care that kids, pets, and adults do not engage in any rough play or throw things in a room that is housing an LCD TV. It only takes a small accident to permanently damage or ruin an LCD TV.

These are just some of the basic pointers that will help you care for your LCD TV properly. If you put these common-sense precautions into practice and pay attention to the placement of your television, you will certainly enjoy watching it for many years to come.

Do you now think of watching HD Television on your laptop or computer? An USB TV tuner allows you to take pleasure in watching TV on your computer by allowing it receive television signals. You are now able to watch and record your favorite TV programs to the hard drive of your computer. USB TV tuner strengthen the capabilities of your computer and could give all the entertainment of a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) cheaply along with simple and easy installation. In order to make it works, all you need to do is just plug the tuner into your computer’s USB port, install the software and link up your coax signal source for either it is Satellite, Cable or Antenna.

USB TV Tuners vs. TV Tuner Cards

USB TV tuners have grown to be much accepted TV tuner cards which are installed just as a PCI card. TV tuner cards need you to open the chassis of your computer to plug into your system board. USB TV tuner installation is actually inserting it into USB port. This will make moving a tuner between computer systems super easy and also they are very easy to hook to laptops and computers.

Manufacturers Of USB TV Tuners

You will find numerous USB TV tuner producers but merely a couple of which are recommend depending on their reliability background and resolve for creating and supporting their TV tuners. For many producers, TV tuners represent merely a really small area of their business so there’s some concern regarding their long-term committment for them that could affect support and warranty issues and that’s why I’m highly recommend on Hauppauge TV tuners because tuners are the things they’re doing.

Different Types of TV Signals

Its not all TV tuner works with all sorts of signal. Most signals (cable, antenna, and satellite) have available in digital but you will find various kinds of digital signals and perhaps still a couple of analog cable broadcasts left. The cheaper tuners are usually suitable for certain types of signals. If you’re unclear about which type of signal you got or what kind you’ll use together with your USB TV tuner you should purchase a mid to higher end tuner to make sure it will likely be suitable for whatever type of signal you wish to watch.

You can view unencrypted QAM cable channels with no tuner but when you wish to watch additional cable or satellite channels you will have to connect the tuner to a set top box.

Antennas – A lot of USB TV tuners are feature with either a small external desktop antenna or a built in antenna. However in case you are intended to watch the TV programs through the air signals by using your TV tuner then it’s suggested in which you should get an upgraded antenna. The strength of the Signal tend to fluctuate vastly depended on the distance of the location from the broadcast antenna as well as how direct the signal is. Typically the signal is weaker in the basement or inside a room without any window.

Other choices – A few of the USB TV tuners are providing you with a remote control and some even will come with a built-in FM radio receiver which allows you to listen to radio program and music. Also you will find some USB TV tuners have 2 units. In case you wish to watch one channel and at the same time recording the other channel, then you will have to buy a dual tuner model.

Nowadays almost all tuners are having the ability to capture video. This means that the tuners can let you connect your laptop or computer to a VHS machine and record VHS tapes on your hard drive. After recording, you are able to edit the videos and burn the videos into a DVD.

High Definition (HDTV) USB Tuners

USB TV tuners are presently only suitable for HD (High definition) signals from within the air broadcasts instead of through satelite or cable signals. To take full advantage of HD broadcasts you may need a LCD monitor with a resolution that is able to exhibiting HD (normally 780i is already good enough). As in today most prime time network shows are actually broadcast in HD.

Selecting The Right USB TV Tuner

- Easy installation: Internal tuners are usually harder to install compare to the external ones. For instance, USB TV tuners can easily be plugged right into a USB port, and will be all set. They are especially handy should you don’t want to invest more on getting someone to install the tuner for you, or if you’re much less comfortable with technology.

- Quality of transmission: Typically, it had been believed that internal tuners offered a much better quality of transmission. Recent consumer surveys have revealed, however, that the standard of either choice is nearly exactly the same.

- Use of channels: With satellite TV software in your tuner, you could have use of 1000′s of channels from around the globe. By comparison, a USB TV tuner provides you with use of merely a couple of hundred channels.

- Cost: Internal TV tuners typically cost significantly a lot more compare to external ones.

- Technical particulars: Prior to purchasing a TV tuner card, do a comparison on the frame rate of different tuners available on the market. Also see if your sound card works with the tuner. This really is something you’ll have to consider, because all tuners produced by different manufacturers tend to be varied in details.

- Requirements: Internal TV tuners can function anywhere over the world provided that you’ve a Wi-fi compatibility connection. This is particularly helpful should you travel extensively and spend considerable time on the road in international airports or train rides. In contrast, to record or stream a TV program, an external TV tuner will require a minimum of a wired broadband connection.

Although the iPhone is certainly not the first phone with the ability to be used as a modem, it is definitely one of the best and easiest to use. In order to use your iPhone as a wireless broadband modem, it is necessary to tether it to your computer. When the iPhone is converted into a modem and tethered to a laptop or PC, that computer no longer needs Wi-Fi or a network cable to access the internet but can do so directly through the iPhone. While this was, in past days, mainly only used by business and sales personnel while on the road, reduced rates and faster connections have given tethering more of a widespread appeal. Here’s how to do it.

Before tethering, it’s important to have all the latest software on your iPhone. Connect your iPhone to your computer, open iTunes, and check for updates. Once all updates have been correctly installed, we’ll move on to the tethering process.

Go to the Settings menu in your iPhone and open the General tab followed by the Network tab, then click on Internet Tethering. There should be an On and Off switch. Make sure this switch is switched to On.

Next, connect your iPhone to your computer. You can connect via USB or Bluetooth. If you are not familiar with your iPhone’s Bluetooth function, go back to the Settings menu and click on the General tab. Find the Bluetooth menu and slide the Bluetooth switch from Off to On. Access your laptop or PC’s Bluetooth menu, found in the Control Panel in Windows, and set it to search for Bluetooth devices.

Now, configure your laptop or PC’s network settings to recognize the internet connection provided by your iPhone. Your computer should recognize the connection automatically and connect immediately but if not, follow the following steps to configure it. In Windows XP, double click on the wireless internet icon found in your taskbar to open your computer’s Network Settings menu, and click on the button labelled Mobile Device Ethernet. In Windows Vista, use the Network and Sharing Centre menu in your computer’s Control Panel. Find the button marked View Status and use the menu that opens to diagnose any problems that may have come up.

You are now using your iPhone as a modem to access the internet from your computer. A blue bar should appear at the top of the screen of your iPhone displaying the words Internet Tethering. This is to show that you have correctly connected your computer to the internet through your iPhone. The tethering remains active whether or not you are currently using the internet connection of your computer. Fortunately for us texting addicts, you may still text your friends and even dial and receive calls to your iPhone when it is tethered to your laptop or PC.

Even though it may be an easy process, it may not be a cheap one. Accessing data from your iPhone often costs quite a bit depending on which provider you are using. If you would like to keep a watchful eye on the amount of data you are eating up, go back to the Settings tab in your iPhone and again click on the General Button. You will see a menu labelled Usage. Enter this menu to keep close tabs on your data usage.

This is a guest post by Spencer Hogg from the website SIM Only where you can find SIM only plans with data for your iPhone which you now know how to use as a modem.

Despite the LG LX9500 series being sold in both 47- and 55-inch screens, this TV review article will focus on the 47-inch because the specs are identical on both. Therefore, the only choice from the beginning would be whether to opt for the larger screen or the smaller one; however, even 47 inches looks large because of the design of the television.

The Design of LG LX9500 Series

The design of the LX9500 is what sets it apart from other televisions of its type. LG focused on creating a television that minimized the frame as much as possible, which makes the screen look massive set within a 7/8″ frame. In fact, 1/4″ of the frame is transparent while the remainder is high-gloss black. The widest part of the frame is beneath the picture where the illuminated LG logo is displayed — the logo can be turned off, creating an uninterrupted black frame.

LG LX9500 Picture

Unlike the smaller LG LE8500 series, the LG LX9500 Series features 3D technology that must be viewed using a set of LG 3D glasses that are not included with the television. More options and features come wrapped in the 2D mode of the television, such as presets for THX, gamma settings, and the improved Picture Wizard that helps new users get adjusted to the controls and picture setup.

Fewer options are provided in 3D mode, such as three nonadjustable picture presets. Some options from the standard menu are inaccessible to ensure users don’t accidentally mess up the picture — while it would be nice to access every part of the TV, it’s not necessary.

Remote Control

One interesting feature of the LX9500 series is the remote control, dubbed the “Magic Wand.” It works similar to a Wii remote; with a flick of the wrist, menu items can be selected and onscreen buttons can be pointed to. Because of this technology, there are fewer buttons on the controller.

Media

Most high-tech televisions provide internet streaming, but LG was one of the first companies to include Netflix and other streaming media. Along with Netflix, YouTube and Vudu video can be streamed directly from the television. With the introduction of internet apps, the television becomes a small computer that accesses games from Yahoo, including Yahoo Widgets and the Twitter app.

The LX9500 includes its own games platform, which features titles such as Whack a Mole and Sudoku. Other internet goodies include Picasa and Flickr Photos, 10 custom games, calendar, and Skype — keep in mind that Skype requires an external speakerphone in order to communicate through the LX9500.

Not only does the LG LX9500 feature a large screen with minimal frame, it also produces an excellent picture with loads of internet apps to match.

Recently Apple just released its originally leading software applications substitute for the iPad. There is iOS version 4.2 is designed with a variety of new features for the iPad, which include features that sure be appealing to business professionals and also to IT business units which have implemented or are looking for iPad deployment.

This Apple upgrading version that is provided for free to get via iTunes, stands out as the 1st bounce to iPad iOS 4. Even though the Apple iphone released the new iOS 4 early in the year but the iPad has long been stuck on iOS 3.2 until now. With the launching of this iOS 4.2, the two products have become unified on a comparable working hard drive (same as ipod device as well).

1. AirPlay

The shininest new feature of iOS 4.2 will be the AirPlay. This application enables anyone to be able to stream their media from an iPad, ipod or iphone to the Apple TV. Even though the overall performance is at the beginning stage plus it might not intelligent enough business use, but it could nevertheless benefits the users still. At this time, once you grab an online video or open up an image, the application enable it to takes only two taps to chuck it up on the big screen. Besides, you are able to nearly immediately switch between different presenters. In the long term, you should think of connecting an Apple TV to a LCD projector in a conference room where you can instantly diplay graphs, slideshow, video clips that display straight away from your iPad. The cost is as little as $99 for the box which is not any bigger than a smartphone.

2. Folders

Now you may create directories or folders on the iPad to organize your different apps into respective category. You can just set aside the apps you are not using very often, by doing this it can save you a lot of time from having to flip through a number of screens in order to get the app that you wish to use.

3. Multitasking

The greatest factor holding back again the iPad happens to be its lack of multitasking. Not anymore as the multitasking features has finally availabel with the upgrade of iOS version 4.2. The multitasking functions are same as the apple iphone which already have this feature in the device earlier this year. For those who are confuse about this , iOS 4.2 multitasking can carry out quick-switching in between applications at the same time conserving the state of applications opening. Nevertheless, at least it alters the iPad from changing into a one-app-at-a-time experience. This really is very critical for people who do copy-and-paste with apps at the same time perform multiple other apps integration. You can just click twice at the household button to gain access to multitasking.

4. Remote device management

Regarding to the business front the iOS 4.2 offers Cellular Device Administration APIs that enable users to press out configuration wirelessly and also wipe or lock an iPad managed by the Information Technology department. These sort of functions are targeted directly for the companies providing lot of iPads to employees.

5. Wi-fi app distribution

With iOS 4.2, companies are able to release their own customized enterprise apps to iPad users through 3G or Wi-Fi. These kind of applications do not need to be in the Apple App Store and customers do not need to sync via iTunes to obtain the apps from the company.

6. Unified inbox

The Mail app provides an enhanced user interface in which jogs my memory of the awesome e-mail features of the Palm Pre. It allows you a fast access to the new messages in the inbox. If you have more than one email accounts setup, it can access to your respective account promptly as well. It can also access to your list of folders for individuals accounts, or into a unified email address which enable you to check all of your email messages by timestamp. Now the iOS 4.2 also supports Microsof Exchange mailboxes.

7. Find My iPad

This was previously part of Apple’s compensated MobileMe service but with iOS 4.two it is now a no cost selection. When you activate this on your iPad you can go to the Apple web page to locate your misplaced iPad on a map, deliver a message to show on the iPad display (If you lost your iPad, please call 987-654-3210), set a remote passcode to lock out prying eyes, or even remotely wipe the device and all of its data.

8. Web browser search on page

The web web browser on the iPad has constantly had a research box for exploring the Internet, but now Apple has extra performance to that box that will allow you to use it to look for text on the current web web page as well. This is specifically valuable when you do a web look and property on a page but can’t find the reference to the key phrase you have been wanting for.

9. AirPrint

Yet another one of the most talked-about is adorned with of 4.2 is AirPrint, which lets you print wirelessly from the iPad. The implementation on this is fairly good. A create choice is extra to the list for creating documents, photographs, and web pages and the iPad instantly recognizes appropriate printers nearby. Regrettably, the record of suitable printers is quite small for now, and apps should want add this performance to their computer software so that publishing should be doable in additional places on the iPad.

10. New speedy controls console

If you click the Residence button two times to go into multitasking and swipe to the panel on the left you’ll discover a new fast management games system that has a play/pause button and ahead/back buttons for the ipod app, a volume management slider, a brightness slider, and a new virtual orientation lck setting. The old bodily orientation lock button (on the proper aspect over the volume buttons) has now been transformed into a mute button.

VIZIO M261VP 26-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV

Last week, I bought the VIZIO M261VP 26-Inch 1080p LED LCD HDTV with VIZIO Internet Application Black and set it up in my bedroom. The reason I bought this HDTV is because of few features that I like such as LED backlight HDTV, built-in 802.11n WiFi, Netflix streaming, as well as the TV featured with 1080p resolution.

I have went through a lot of researches as well as plenty of product reviews online regarding to this TV prior to I make up my mind to buy this TV. The picture quality for this TV is excellent but the audio could be mediocre. You are going to find a lot of negative reviews about the audio for this TV and therefore I would recommend you to buy external stereo speakers and connect to the TV for higher quality of audio. Although it is common for the smaller LCD HDTV’s available in the market today come with poor audio quality, but this VIZIO M261VP can even takes it with a new low with its hysterically horrible sound. You are not going to find any audio setting adjustments to the SRS TruSurround and/or SRS TruVolume which can function to improved the sound quality. So it is advisable not to purchase this TV if you do not want a low quality audio.

Sound Quality of VIZIO M261VP LCD HDTV

The time when I made the purchase for this Vizio LED HDTV, the selling price was $289. Till now, I been using this TV for a week and I am truly enjoying watching DVD with this TV as I mention before the picture quality is great which has fulfill my TV watching experience with satisfaction. As long as you have external stereo speakers hook up with the TV, thing is going to get perfect.

There are only 2 methods for you to hook up your external stereo speakers on VIZIO M261VP 26-Inch 1080p LED LCD HDTV with VIZIO Internet Application Black: you can connect either with the digital optical connection or with the headphone jack.

However, standard RCA audio output jacks which is common use for almost all stereo and home theater are not come together with this TV. To boost the quality of sound, I first mounted a vintage couple of Altec computer audio speakers as well as subwoofer at the same time using headphone jack hook up on the TV. The computer audio speakers in fact produced really good quality of stereo sound which could be satisfactory for normal TV watching for many people. However, if you are planning to stream movies on the internet, you will need to know the dimensions and sound certainly will not come through the headphone jack with your external audio speakers.

You may try this VIZIO M261VP LCD HDTV at your own risk if you wish to buy it.

LCD televisions these days are known for their eye-catching-crystal-clear displays. A lot of factors come into play for the life-like pictures that it offers. The resolution factor, refresh rate, aspect ratio and many others decide on the quality of display and one’s viewing experience. Two other factors that are important in LCD TVs are the contrast ratio and the dynamic ratio.

Contrast Ratio

Contrast Ratio is generally defined as the ratio of the contrast measurement between the brightest colour (white) and the darkest colour (black) in a scene. A good display is expected to have a high contrast ratio.

However, these measurements are not determined by a standard procedure. Each manufacturers have their own way of measuring. Hence these measurements are not suitable for comparisons between models as their numbers can go beyond one’s imagination with extreme methods used.

Different methods of measuring Contrast Ratio

Different methods of measuring contrast ratios are preferred by different manufacturers around the world.

The full on/full off method is one of them. In this case, the television is switched off in order to get the maximum dark level ratio and switched on, (increasing it to the maximum colour setting and brightness setting) in order to get the brightest contrast measurement. The surrounding light effect of the room also plays an important part.

The ANSI contrast is another method of measuring, where the black and white contrast measurements are taken simultaneously with the help of a checker board pattern. Again the light effect inside the room is important.

Some manufacturers use different device parameters, further inflating the calculated contrast ratio. With the use of DLP projectors, the filter wheel is enabled when switched on and disabled when switched off. This method may not be very accurate as it is not possible to determine contrast ratios with image content.

Dynamic Ratio

Generally used in the LCD technology, the dynamic ratio method uses the backlight lamp for its effect. For a dark image, the display would reduce the backlight lamp. This helps in effectively visualizing dark scenes even in dark rooms. Brightness is measured from the emitted luminous intensity on screen, generally measured in candela per square metre (cd/m2). If the reading is high, the screen will be brighter.

Both the method of measurement has its own pros and cons. In a black and white movie or in a prolonged scene that happens in the dark, the preference is always with the high dynamic contrast ratio. On the other hand, with a fast moving picture or a sudden change from a bright atmosphere to a dark background and visa versa, the contrast ration offers excellent performance. Manufacturers these days have come up with some gorgeous television sets. A detailed study on all the aspects of a good display would definitely lead to continuous improvements in the world of televisions.
