I purchased this unit last February 2010. I used it for about 6 months. I am a retired audio visual specialist skilled in the purchase and installation of all forms of audio and video equipment in permanent and portable applications. I have over 35 years experience in the Atlanta Corporate, convention, and medical audio visual markets. After 6 months the unit became hot to the touch and I suspected a heat sinking problem that possibly led to the failure of the unit. I regret not getting a purchase plan from Radio Shack before I bought the unit, in fact the actually begged me to get one. I feel that the “Shack” had seen a high return rate for this unit.
Upon trying to use the one year warranty I ran up against a wall of arrogant and disrespectful bench techies who put me through a cable patch and repatch of equipment set up to verify
the problem in the unit. The tech accused me of plugging in a stand alone power supply into the USB powered jack. The power cable uses the USB power of your computer to run the converter and the motor base 2.5 or 3 mm female power jack on the unit could accommodate
many different external power cables (this is a design problem that is possibly the reason for failure rate). I was informed by the tech who had a vision in his sleep or by assumption that I plugged an unauthorized external power source other than from my computers USB ports causing the failure. Why is this important? To return a product to GranTec you must have a RAN authorization granted by technical engineers who relate partially to electronics and not to well in the roll of customer service people. I asked what circuit protection was provide to the chip set for the converter and was told a simple power limiting resistor (no thermistor) was used and that it was not adequate to completely protect the converter.
I asked the Tech to call me back he promised and I have yet to receive a call or an e-mail.
I encourage everyone to get a return plan for at least 2 years. The product worked well while it worked but I won’t deal directly with Grantec again. Professionals stand by their gear and they want your repeat business. I no longer work in the industry but I am considered by many former clients (major corporations and medical training centers in local area hospitals) as a source for reliable information when it comes to bulk or individual unit purchasing.
PLEASE PURCHASE A RETURN PLAN ON GRANDTEC GEAR! May all your presentations go smoothly.
